The wood sorrel, garden pink sorrel, broad leaf sorrel or Mexican oxalis is a perennial herb. It has no stem, but grows via stolons. The leaves arise on long petioles from ground level, each made up of three widely heart shaped leaflets. Leaf petioles and flower pedicels arise from the rootstock. Flowers are pink, five petaled and funnel shaped. The inner funnel is fluorescent yellow green, which surrounds the beautiful set of stamens are observed. The flower is very simple and lovable ones. On this special day of my little sister's birthday i dedicate this flower to her. I took this photograph on October 3rd, 2011 during the Dussehra flower show at Mysore.
Colville's glory, colvillia or whip tree is a rare, beautiful flowering tree native of Madagascar. This spectacular flowering tree is a fast growing and can reach up to 50 ft. It has fine leaves like ferns. The long and conspicuous cylindrical or cone shaped clusters bear bright orange flowers that are bright red in bud. The grape like clusters of velvety buds vary in colour from green to blood orange, which are a wonderful sight. The sighting of this tree in full bloom was a pleasant surprise to me in the morning of 10th September, 2011, in a park opposite to the district court, Mysore. As i was busy shooting, i could see a large number of beetles flocking around the flowers and the tree waving its head, as if welcoming the friends!
Bush sorrel, wild sour or Bush althea is a weak stemmed, prostrate or climbing plant covered with soft hairs and scattered prickles. The leaves are rounded up to 10 x 10 cm and deeply and palmately three to five lobbed. The flowers are yellow with dark center. This photograph was taken on 3rd September, 2011 near Pest Management Lab, CSRTI, Mysore.
Caucasian cotton thistle is a biennial herb 20-25 cm tall. Stem are prominently winged with triangular lance shaped, stoutly spined lobs. Stem leaves are pinnately cut or lobed. Stalks carrying the flower heads are upto 5 cm, strongly spiny winged. Florets are purplish-pink, 1.5 to 1.9 cm. I took this photo on my way to Coonoor, somewhere near Ooty on 30th November, 2010.
Red crucifix orchid or star orchid is a ground rooting orchid. It has a trend to sprout roots all along the length of the stem. It tolerates wide variety of temperature and environmental conditions. Has got a long umbelliform inflorescence, resupinate flowers clustered in a ball at the apex. At any point of time you will see the same type of flowers in the inflorescence as the young buds have just opened or ready to be opened up the very next day, thus keeping the inflorescence young always. I took this photo on 5th September, 2011 from the uncle's home at Mysore.
The pink water lily is native to India and South east Asia. This beautiful water plant is seen in shallow water ponds and many home gardens in small ponds or in large containers. The pink flower is a wonderful sight to be on the surface of water. The leaves of the plants are elliptic oval to circular in shape. The flowers are 5-15 cm in diameter with more than a dozen petals. This has flowered near the main gate of CSRTI, Mysore and i shot it in the morning of 3rd September, 2011 which has mesmerised me tooo much .....
Cutch tree is a small deciduous thorny tree, growing upto 15 m high. This is native to India and Thailand. The stem is dark brown to black, with rough bark which peels off in long strips in mature trees. The fern-like leaves are 100-200 mm long and contain between 8 and 30 pairs of small leaves made up of numerous, oblong pairs of secondary leaflets 2-6 mm long. Pairs of stout thorns up to 10 mm long are found at the base of each leaf. The flowers are white or pale yellow, about 3 mm long and bunched tightly together to form a cylindrical flower spike, 35-75 mm long, resembling a lamb's tail. I photographed this flower on 11th September, 2011 as i was back to my home from lab.
