Shrubby Whitevein is a semiwoody evergreen shrub growing up to 6-8 ft with smooth bright green or purple stems, large variegated leaves and colorful flowers. The leaves are up to a foot in length, opposite on the stems and marked with prominent, well defined yellow or ivory veins, which gives it its common name. The tubular flowers are yellow with red bracts, about 2 in long and borne in spikes of 6-10, at the end of branches. It blooms almost throughout most of the year. Shrubby Whitevein is native to northeastern Peru and Equador where it grows in the humid understory of tropical rainforests. I took this photograph on 29th February, 2012 in a park near Ontikoppal, Mysore.
