Painted Spiral Ginger is a perennial herb, native to Mexico. It has long narrow leaves with a characteristic wavy edges. The bases of the sheaths are mottled with markings that have earned the plant the synonym of Costus hieroglyphica. The inflorescences form both at the end of a leafy stem, and less often radically on a short nearly leafless stem. Painted Spiral Ginger can be recognized by its yellow flowers with red spots and stripes. In India it is grown in gardens as ornamental plant especially in Kerala in every home. The major attraction of this plant is its stem with spiral leaves and light airy and tissue paper like flowers. Red painted stem enhances the beauty of the glossy leaves and strongly spiralling canes. I took this photograph on 19th June, 2012, near my home in Mysore.
A perennial herb whose leaves are basal, simple, elongated, and with glandular hairs. Flowers are terminal on a naked stem, 5-parted, funnel-shaped, pale lilac, purple or white with a greenish-yellow eye. Fruit is a capsule. A German horticulturist, successfully breed a primin-free Primula obconica cultivar but unfortunately the flowers were much less spectacular. These plants are great for adding colour to cool greenhouses and windowsills during spring. They produce brightly coloured flowers that last for several weeks if spent flowers are removed regularly. I took this photograph from Coonoor Sims Park, on 19th May, 2010 while on a family trip.
Juhi is a beautiful flower with extremely heavy gardenia type scent. This species is not very common, though it deserves a special attention. For those who are familiar with this plant, Juhi is a most wonderful Jasmine. A stunning small scandent bushy plant with simple ovate dark green small leaves and powdery satin white flowers. Possessing strong gardenia like scent, flowers appear in bunches from summer to fall. Very easy to grow, takes both sun and shade, dry and moist conditions. Highly recommended jasmine for scented garden or as indoor plant. A must for everyone who appreciate fragrant flowers. The flower is held sacred to all forms of Goddess Devi and is used as sacred offerings during Hindu religious ceremonies. I took this photograph on 7th July, 2010 while going for a plant collection trip with my friend, some 20 kms south of Mysore.
