Leaning towards you ...

Scientific name:  Coccinia grandis
Ivy gourd is an aggressive vine that can spread quickly over trees, shrubs, fences and other supports. Being a perennial plant, it can spread vegetatively or by seed. The long tendrils are elastic with coil like springs, that can wrap around the host. The leaves are palmately simple with five lobes. The flowers are large and white, about 4 cm across with five long tubular petals. The creamish coloured stamen is triangular in shape. I took this photograph on 23rd December 2011 from just in front of my home in my native place, which was leaning over a bush!

Humble but staple ...

Scientific name: Manihot utilissima
The bitter cassava or tapioca is a plant with long tuberous edible roots and soft brittle stems. The plant is native to the Amazone region of Latin America. It grows to a height of 1.5 to 2.5 m tall. The flowers are creamish with pink shades on the petal edges. The flowers are with five petals and each with a stamen attached to int. Another bunch of short stamens are found in the centre. This is a staple food for common man in many African, Latin American and Asian countries with full of starch sans any proteins. In India also in the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu it is widely cultivated. I took this photograph on 23rd December 2011, just in front of my sister's home in Kerala.

A casual smile ...

Scientific name: Morinda pubescens
Indian mulberry is an ever green shrub or small tree, growing up to 5 - 10 m tall. The stem is short and crooked with rough bark with longitudinal cuts. Leaves are oppositely arranged, 15-25 cm long, oblong to to lanceolate. Flowers occur in spherical heads, 3-5 cm across in 2-3 cm long. Flowers are tubular, white, scented and about 2 cm long. This small tree is common in my native place in Kerala. My father used the wood of these tree to make agricultural equipment/stool/stand etc. Recently during my visit to native place, i took this photograph on 23rd Dcember 2011 from a piece of land owned by me.

Luring with the fruit behind ...

Scientific name: Fragaria nubicola
Himalayan strawberry is a species native to Himalayas. It is a low growing, softly hairy perennial herb with trifoliate leaves and long runners, rooting at the nodes. It bears white flowers 1.5 to 2.5 cm across, which has five broadly ovate petals and a bunch of yellow stamens at the middle. This photo was taken from my colleague and friend's home in the evening of 19th January 2012. I am thankful to him for guiding me in my venture!

Blinking stars ...

Scientific name: Xenostegia tridentata
Arrow leaf morning glory is a perennial creeper growing up to 2 m long. The leaves are linear oblong to linear, dilated towards base. The funnel shaped small yellow flowers are very attractive. The maroon center is very attractive with five anthrers protruding out. I took this photograph in the morning of 20th December 2011 in my native village in Kerala.
