Chinese ixora is found around Myanmar, Vietnam, Peninsular Malaysia and got introduced to India also. It is being cultivated all along tropics for their long lasting flowers. The branchlets of inflorescence is opposite, flowers with corolla tube is 3 - 3.5 cm long, lobes circular obovate, broadly rounded at apex. This flower was photographed on 9th September, 2011 near district court Mysore.
The sandy rebuta is a succulent cactus, beautiful even without blooming. It is native to Bolivia. This is with perfectly neat, symmetrical spines and yellowish orange flowers. The stem forms pups after certain size and age. If you need to see flowers on the plant you should not water it for many days. Scanty watering enough and the soil should be allowed to dry. I planted this one ten years before while i was working in Bangalore. We are moving with it where ever we go. It flowered on 29th April 2011 and am lucky to take the photograph in the morning itself!
The fairy lily, Zephyr lily or rain lily is a bulbous plant, bearing linear hollow, strap shaped or grass like leaves. The solitary flowers have 6 pointed petals with equal number of bright and beautiful stamens. It flourishes throughout the rainy season, especially after heavy showers. It is suitable for planting in pots or in beds. If it is planted on grass edges, it gives a beautiful look while on full bloom. It took this photograph in my native place from a very famous plant nursery while visiting with my sister and brother-in-law, on 12th October, 2011.
Silk leaf or American softhead is an annual herb, growing up to one meter tall. It is native to America. Leaves are opposite, simple, ovate with toothed margin and is silky beneath. Flowers are tiny, white-cream coloured with five petals occur in a composite head. The heads are surrounded by silky leaves, which probably lends it one of its common names. It was familiar to me from my post-graduation days. I still remember, my teacher who familiarised it to me as it was considered a weed in mulberry plantation. I took this photo on 31st August 2011 in the CSRTI, Mysore campus and dedicate it to my teacher.
The Mexican flame vine or orange vine glow is a northern and Central Mexican native. It is a woody tropical vine and covering itself with the bright orange blossoms. The flowers are about 2.5 cm in diameter and are borne in small clusters. As they age the flowers change from orange to almost red. I took this photograph on 6th September, 2011 at my colleagues terrace, where they were nurturing the plant in a mud pot.
The thorn apple, Indian apple or moon flower is native to Central and South America. It is an annual shrub, reaches upto a height of 1.5 m. Stems and leaves are covered with short and greyish hairs. The flowers are white, trumpet shaped and 12-19 cm long. The beautiful and attractive flowers bloom in the night. The plant is considered to be poisonous. I took this photograph on 30th August, 2011 near the institute where i am working presently.
Wild plumeria, bridal bouquet, white frangipani or fiddle leaf plumeria is an evergreen species of plumeria native to Panama, Columbia and Venezuela. It is an easy to grow plant. Leaves are dark green and fiddle shaped or spoon shaped. They bloom very heavily. Large clusters of bright white flowers with yellow centre form a bouquet shape and hence the name bridal bouquet. On several occasions i had photographed this flower in the past, but this snap i liked the most as i snapped it immediately after a brief drizzle in the morning of 16th September, 2011 in the home of the uncle in Mysore. I dedicate this flower to my dear Manikkutty, my daughter, today being her birthday!
